Remember when it was NEW

Some of us came to the courts bringing familiarity and/or experience with the game. Many of us remember walking through the Aquatic Center hearing the popping sound of ball hitting paddle and were drawn to it like vultures to roadkill. After watching for the briefest of moments, we realized we could do this and the surge of competitive adrenaline tickled our instincts, resulting in the immediate quest for our first paddle. Eight paddles later (except Lamar with 22) we remain members of our unique community which requires only two conditions: a love for the game and being a decent human being.
In return, we gain entry to a community that introduces joy, fun, exercise, competition, learning, conditioning and time off intermittently due to injury. But mostly it introduces us into a world of 450+ people, many of whom we would never have met outside the courts. This activity has reshaped our lives in many ways. Just think of the daily effort it takes to schedule our lives around pickleball and the things we have ceased to do to accommodate it.
This is all brought to mind by our PicklePals program which pairs experienced and less experienced players as teammates for drills and games. The finale of the season will be a Tournament experience for all participants. The defining sound of this event is laughter. The pure joy of finally hitting that shot you've been working on or becoming able to serve to an opponent's backhand on command. Or, even better, the complete mishit that dribbles over the net for a "winner". Finally, and best of all, is the 80 year old novice player giggling because he crushed one.
Hard not to love this game!
RULES CLUES: The swing is not part of the volley
2025 Rule: 9.B.1 The act of volleying begins when the ball is struck out of the air before bouncing (volleyed) and ends when the player’s movement from the follow-through movement stops.
9.H There is no violation if a player returns the ball while their partner is standing in the non-volley zone as long as the partners, including anything the partners are wearing or carrying, do not contact each other during the act of volleying.
